3D Geomodelling

This 16-module course addresses the techniques employed in the construction of realistic and accurate geological volumes and structures in mainstream software packages

The course describes model inputs, validation, verification and highlights common pitfalls. It explains the recent shift from explicit, section-based, geometrical modelling to attribute modelling, to rules-based, implicit modelling, such as that employed by Leapfrog. The course is particularly useful for Geoscientists or companies that are considering a change in 3D geomodelling software. The course is presented annually via the Geological Society of South Africa’s Directorate of Professional Programmes and forms part of the curriculum at the University of Stellenbosch.

GAP Analysis, Training, Implementation

Constructing and maintaining an accurate model in a fast-paced mining environment requires fit-for purpose data accusation, interpretation and 3D modelling workflows. A GAP analysis, incorporating workflow development, on-data training and site-specific implementation is the recommended solution to implement models that may be utilized by Geotechnical, Hydrogeological, Production and Mineral Resource Estimation Departments.

Modern Geological Mapping

Geological maps, remote sensing, field and research datasets provide critical insights into: spatial-temporal-PT evolution; lithological and structural controls on ore-bearing fluids and mineralization. Mapping is becoming faster, more accurate, digital and safer, whilst continuously evolving with new technologies and imagery.

Participants are trained in all phases of the mapping workflow: from project initiation, logistics, health and safety protocols, remote sensing, fieldwork techniques, research methods, geological mapping, to explanation compilation and delivery, in four main phases and using real datasets. Practical components require the participants to combine and integrate these concepts to produce a project portfolio, including a project management report, preliminary geological map and an explanation with research findings and mineral prospectivity. A field-based mapping component, which may be customised to the Client’s location, budget and requirements, is also offered. The course has been delivered to survey Geologists and Honours students from South Africa, Namibia, Tanzania and Malawi.

Structural Geology

This course comprises 10 modules that address the fundamentals and recent developments in structural geology

An often intimidating university course, Structural Geology is a discipline routinely required in mapping, data gathering and interpretation of structural settings of prospects or deposits

The course will be useful to Geoscientists who: require a refresher on the subject; are interested in topics that were not covered in undergraduate courses; are interested in the application of Structural Geology to mineralization and 3D modelling

Courses may be customized to suit the context of a client’s project

Leapfrog Masterclass

This 3-day course comprises 11 modules focused on resolving structurally-complex geology in Leapfrog

TECT, in collaboration with Seequent, provides training for advanced or experienced Leapfrog users, using comprehensive real-world datasets in a variety of structurally-complex geological environments. The interactive course covers Leapfrog’s advanced 3D modelling tools. Focus is placed on structural geology and multiple data types to derive realistic geometries. Practical exercises provide users with a hands-on introduction to advanced modelling techniques, guided by best practice principles and strategies employed by experienced Structural-Economic Geologists
